Staff and students from Penycae primary school are celebrating this month after former pupil Adam Jones funded a school trip for Years 1 and 2.

Chamber of Commerce member and Managing Director Adam Jones from Lyan Packaging joined other local business people for a recent breakfast networking event at Xplore! Science Discovery Centre.  After their ‘speed networking’ session, Business Development Officer, Katie Williams talked to the group about the centre and of its charitable aims of inspiring the next generation through the development of fun, interactive and topical STEM-based workshops (science, technology, engineering and maths).

Hearing about the work of Xplore!, its impact within the local community and of the opportunities to sponsor a school visit to the science centre, Adam was quick to offer the support of Lyan Packaging.

Katie commented that ‘this partnership cements the reason why I work with Xplore!; to invest in Wrexham so that our children have access to opportunities to succeed in life.  Meeting someone who shares my passion is amazing and we’re incredibly grateful to Adam for making this visit possible.’

Adam commented that ‘Having seen first-hand the fantastic work they do at Xplore! to promote STEM-based learning amongst children in the local community, it is an absolute pleasure in being able to support them. Having previously gone to Penycae primary school myself, it was also great to be able to support my old school.

Following school and college in Wrexham, I went on to study a degree in Engineering in Cardiff University. Having seen the opportunities that studying a subject such as Engineering can provide in life, it is really important to me that we encourage children to consider STEM-based careers and learning, particularly girls who are under-represented in the field, and also those from a background who lack the confidence to believe in what they can achieve.
