We’re delighted to welcome Ipsen back for another sponsored visit to Xplore! Science Discovery Centre during British Science Week. Learners from Ysgol Bwlchgwyn took part in a wide range of engaging activities and workshops, hosted and delivered by the fantastic Ipsen STEM ambassadors, as well as support from the science communicators at Xplore!
Ipsen’s activities this Science Week brought science and medicine to life through a wide range of exciting, hands-on experiences, including:
- Fermentation
In this activity, children explore how tiny living things (microbes) grow and make useful products. Using a special container called a bioreactor, they’ll learn how scientists carefully look after these microbes to help them stay healthy and do their job.
- Microbiology
Children will create fun patterns using “bacteria” on a jelly plate, just like real scientists do in labs. This helps them learn how microbes grow and why it’s important to keep things clean to stay safe and healthy.
- Gowning
This activity teaches children how to dress like a scientist! They’ll learn why wearing special clothing is important to stop germs from getting into clean areas and to keep both people and products safe.
- Analytical
In this activity, children will practice using small tools to measure liquids carefully. They’ll learn how scientists test things to make sure medicines are safe and the right strength.
- Packing Automation
Children will take on a fun challenge to fill small containers quickly and carefully, just like machines in factories. They’ll see how being accurate helps make sure everything is done safely and correctly.
- DNA Match-Up This activity helps children learn about DNA—the instructions inside our bodies. By matching pieces together, they’ll discover how we are all similar but also a little bit different, and how this helps scientists learn about health and medicine.
Georgia Griffiths, a Scientist 1 in Analytical Development at Ipsen, said: “I love participating in Xplore Sponsorship Days as they provide an opportunity to strengthen STEM engagement within the local community by offering accessible, hands‑on learning experiences that helps to build confidence, spark curiosity, and support skills development, encouraging young people to explore future pathways in science and technology.”
Overall, the visit was a fantastic opportunity for learners to explore the world of science and medicine in a hands-on, engaging way. We’re incredibly grateful to Ipsen and their STEM ambassadors for sharing their time, knowledge, and enthusiasm, and for helping to inspire the next generation of scientists.
