Wrexham school children learn money skills from Principality and Xplore!

Children from a school in Wrexham are money smart after receiving a money masterclass workshop from Principality Building Society and educational charity Xplore!.

Students in years one and two from Black Lane CP School received the financial education workshops, which used activities such as board games to teach life skills such as: identifying money, costing and learning how to save.

The visit was part of the ‘Principality Savings school’ project, where colleagues at Wales’ largest building society and Xplore!’s education outreach team have joined forces to deliver financial education in a fun and engaging way. From now until Spring 2022, over 1,000 primary school children across North Wales, Chester and Shrewsbury will learn money and savings skills as part of the project.

Lucy Saiet-Jones, Teacher at Black Lane CP School said: ‘’The workshop was an excellent introduction to saving money for Foundation Phase children. The carousel of hands on activities were engaging, fun and educational - from coin recognition to role play working and using a building society. The children loved it!’’

The partnership builds on the principles and practices within the Donaldson curriculum in Wales as well as responding to research commissioned by the Money and Pensions Service that has identified that children start to form adult money habits between the ages of three and seven.

As Wales’ largest building society, Principality is committed to supporting schools with financial education and careers based learnings and since 2017, has reached 40,000 young people in Wales with money and careers based activities.

Annette Duckett, Customer Consultant – Wrexham, Principality Building Society said:

‘’We really enjoyed meeting the students at Black Lane CP School and teaching them ways to manage and save money. We’re really excited to be delivering the workshops with Xplore! for schools in North Wales, which lay the groundwork for important life lessons around money management that the pupils can take with them into adulthood.”

Katie Williams, Business Development and Stakeholder Engagement Officer, Xplore! said:

‘’Having delivered the sessions back in 2019 it was wonderful to hear that Principality were keen to roll the workshops out to more children across the region. Delivering activities to school children at Black Lane CP School on Friday 19th November provided yet another great reason to talk about money not only in terms of saving or spending, but also in terms of giving. Many of the children were aware of it being Children in Need Day and about the choices we can all make about where our money goes.”
